[Background] Here
[Personality] Bucky is a hero at heart but he is by no means a perfect example. A deeply flawed man, he’s had his share of heartache and horrors throughout his life. Having grown up on an Army base, James always knew what he wanted to be a soldier just like his dad. But then his father died in a training accident and his sister was shipped off to boarding school. Somehow, he managed to convince the commanders of the base to let him stay on at Camp Lehigh.
Growing up, Bucky was a bit of a bully and was constantly picking fights or getting into scuffles. He was a natural born fighter but lacked discipline; something that he was sorely in need of. The military gave him the focus, discipline and purpose he needed to channel his more aggressive tendencies.
But even the military it couldn’t cure him of all of his bad habits like his smart aleck mouth or his impetuousness. He is prone to brashness, a trait that surface even when under the Soviet programming. Bucky is also given to the occasional bout of crippling melancholy as one would expect from someone who has lived the life James has.
His time with Captain America helped to teach Bucky the virtue of compassion and empathy. He has outgrown his bullying youth and matured into a man who would like nothing more than to avoid a fight these days. Just because he prefers to avoid picking the fights doesn’t mean that James will hesitate to push back or finish a fight once started.
Unlike Steve, he’s never shied away from doing the dirty things that need to be done. While Captain America couldn’t afford to be seen as anything but virtuous, Bucky was the one who had been getting his hands dirty since WWII and long before he became the Winter Soldier.
Having recently regained his memories and the knowledge of all the people he killed, James has been struggling to come to terms with that revelation. His conscious weighs heavily on his shoulders and he suffers from almost nightly nightmares because of it.
When Steve Rogers died, Bucky decided to step into his shoes as Captain America both because he wanted to redeem himself but also out of selfish urges. He couldn’t bear the thought of anyone else wielding Steve’s shield.
Even now, he’s far from a perfect man.
Friendship and loyalty are very important to Bucky. Perhaps it was because he lost his own family at such a young age and the borderline neglect he faced rambling around Camp Lehigh but such bonds are important to James. When he hooked up with Steve and the Invaders, he found a different kind of family; one that he protected fiercely. Unfortunately, life wrenched that family away from him and scattered them to the four winds.
He has tried to bond with the Avengers but it’s been hit or miss for the most part. The New Avengers initially disliked him because he accepted Tony’s offer to carry Cap’s shield. Hawkeye especially detested him because Steve meant a lot to the archer and Clint didn’t think Bucky had the right to claim the name of Captain America.
And could you blame them? This unknown man appeared out of nowhere and took up Steve’s mantle without even consulting them. No, who could blame them for their outrage? But James accepted that outrage and venom for the most part without bitterness. Because he understood where they were coming from and in his hearts of hearts, he doesn’t think he deserves to be Captain America either.
But that’s not to say he hasn’t made friends among the Avengers. He and Sam Wilson, the Falcon worked together and became close friends. Bucky has even managed to overcome his initial rocky start with most of the Avengers, including Clint. The two share a very snarky and often sarcastic barbs which might be considered ‘bonding’
He’s still closest to Steve though. The man has been his best friend since the forties. Nearly seventy years of distance and time apart hasn’t managed to strain their friendship. And without Steve’s assuring him that he believed Bucky was worthy of wielding the shield, James still would be questioning himself and his abilities to be Captain America.
That’s how important Steve’s approval is to Bucky. It doesn’t matter that he’s a grown man now and lived his own life, at the end of the day, he’s always going to be that gangling sixteen year old kid looking for direction and a father figure in his life. And Steve has fulfilled that position at every turn. He’s a paternal figure, a best friend and a brother to the younger man.
The only other person who has as much of an influence on Bucky’s life is Natasha. She is perhaps the only good memory to come from his time as Winter Soldier. A lifetime ago, when they were both younger in both body and spirit, they found one another and for the briefest of moments they were in love. It was a love neither dared advertise nor display. He was her trainer and she promised to another man. They knew from the start their romance was doomed to fail yet still the two risked imprisonment and perhaps even death to share that intimacy. They romance ended when Winter Soldier was put back into cryogenic stasis once again and Natasha moved on with her life.
One might think that would have been the end of the story but it wasn’t. Wakening halfway around the world and more than fifty years apart, they found one another again. She was no longer a Russian operative and he free of Soviet brainwashing. But things are never so easy.
First they found themselves on opposite sides of a conflict and then there were
plenty of obstacles to overcome. With Steve’s death, it was Natasha who helped but through his crisis of identity and realization of just what he’d done. As he’s said, she was the one who kept him sane. And somewhere along the way, they fell back in love once more. And he loves her deeply, more so than he’s ever loved anyone else in his life. With Natasha, the ever present shadows threatening to overtake him are held at bay. She is the one who convinced him that despite all the terrible things he’s done, he still deserves happiness. And it is Natasha who brings out the better parts of Bucky Barnes. Without her, he’d be lost.
His recent trial and outing of his blood-soaked past has almost been a relief in many ways. He faced the charges brought against him by the US government and the subsequent extradition to Russia without flinching away but instead accepted it with grim resolve. James knows he’s done terrible things, awful things for which there will always be a price. And he’s willing to pay that in whichever way is required.
At the end of the day, Bucky is seeking redemption and a means in which to clean his slate. But when you consider his propensity for rushing into situations and a decided lack of care for his own personal safety, it’s only a matter of time before something truly terrible happens to him.
[Specialties/Abilities]
Bionic Arm:
Superhuman Strength: Has some degree of superhuman strength in his bionic arm.
Enhanced Reaction Time: His arm's reaction time is greater than that of any Olympic athlete who has and will ever compete.
Sensory Array: The arm houses different sensors which allow him to pass through security such as metal detectors without setting them off. It can also shield other metallic objects from detection such as firearms and knives.
Extended Reach: He can apparently either control his bionic arm even if it has been removed from his body (possibly by cybernetic implants), or his arm can be programmed to perform certain actions on its own while removed from his body.
Specialized Skill Set:
Master Martial Artist: Barnes is a dangerously skilled martial artist and hand-to-hand combatant. He received training from World War Two hand-to-hand combat luminaries William Essart Fairbairn and Colonel Rex Applegate as well as Captain America (Steve Rogers) in multiple martial arts, and acrobatics as a teenager during WWII and was trained in more of them while being molded into an assassin by the Soviet Union. He has single-handedly beaten Crossbones, a squad of SHIELD agents, Wolverine and the Black Widow, defeated a regiment of Hydra agents alongside the Young Avengers, in combat and fought Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Iron Man to a standstill.
Expert Marksman: He is an extremely accurate marksman. Skilled in sharpshooting and knife throwing.
Skilled Shield Fighter: Barnes is becoming rapidly proficient with his former partner's shield. He is able to throw it with near perfect aim striking multiple targets in a single throw and achieving a boomerang-like return after throwing it at single person or object.
Skilled Acrobat: He is an Olympic level athlete and acrobat capable of many difficult acrobatic feats.
Peak Human Conditioning: Has shown Olympic to possible near peak human level strength, agility, endurance, dexterity, etc.
Advanced Scout: Barnes is a very gifted scout and adept at stealth and concealment.
Multi-lingual: He is fluent in English, Russian, German, Japanese, and a little French. He might be able to speak other languages.
Expert Spy: He is an expert in the field of espionage thanks largely to World War Two hand-to-hand combat luminaries William Essart Fairbairn and Colonel Rex Applegate, his former partner, Steve Rogers, the United States military, British SAS regiment, and the Russian Government. He is skilled in stealth, demolitions, survival, deducing other persons ways of thinking and other fields.
Expert Assassin: Barnes is an adept of his generation as Matthew Murdock and Elektra Natchios is of theirs, possibly the most lethal assassin in the marvel universe rivaling others such as Bullseye or Elektra. During an operation on the Russian Front with the Invaders, Barnes has from concealment thrown a 60 centimeters-long knife to penetrate the winter uniform outer garment of a German soldier with such accuracy as to pierce his heart in high arctic winds several meters. Barnes has mastered and implemented several methods to silently eliminate sentries with bladed weapons, garrotes or his bare hands, making him as lethal in his own way as his former Invader teammates, the Torches, Union Jack or Namor. He is a master at stealth and tracking and is very intelligent. He was able to render Wolverine's superhumanly acute senses such as smell completely useless by luring him to an abandoned warehouse that was completely soaked on the inside with oil and even soaking himself to make it so that Wolverine could not detect him. Barnes has made a habit out of constantly studying his surroundings and depicting what he can and cannot do in whatever situation he should fall in much like his former partner, Captain America before his death. During Barnes' visit to the Captain America exhibit that had been made to honor him after his death, he was constantly detecting potential ways to sneak in and out of the museum and the room without being detected and only taking out a small number of security to do so. The Black Widow stated to Tony Stark that he was one of the most dangerous men she knew.
[Affection] Affection? If he knows you and trusts you (A very, very short list) Bucky doesn't mind the occasional hug, touch or affectionate punch to the shoulder. Otherwise, expect him to either freeze you out or lash out depending on the situation. Not really the touchy-feely type of person
[Fighting] By all means though keep in mind James is a highly skilled killer and fighter whose cumulative career spans more than seventy years of history. Even highly trained soldiers and S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives aren't a match for the former Winter Soldier. But he's just as frail as any other baseline human and can be hurt. The mun would prefer being contacted before anyone 'kills' him however.
[Other Permissions] He has minimal shielding against such things though Bucky's mind is a snarl of conflicting thoughts, memories and data. The Soviets brainwashed him each time he was taken in and out of cold storage and pretty much wiped away everything that wasn't necessary. Even he still hasn't figured out which is real and which is conjecture. So tread lightly in this one's head. However, point of fact, he will react poorly if he finds out someone has been trying to mess around in his head. It's a very touchy subject with James and is liable to end in bloodshed and him possibly trying to kill whomever dared to invade his privacy like that.
